Promote environmental protection and safety in your business with support from the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM).
The subsidy programme „De-Minimis“ has been continued as of the 2024 funding period under the new name „Umweltschutz und Sicherheit (US)“ (Environmental Protection and Safety).
It is aimed at companies in a wide range of sectors that use lorries - whether in production, construction, trade or logistics - and promotes measures that improve operational efficiency as well as environmental protection and safety. The Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) emphasises that the new name reflects the aim of the programme more clearly and appeals to more companies.
Heavy Goods Transport: Levers for Environmental Impact and Cost Efficiency
One of the biggest contributors to climate change is transport, especially freight transport on roads. It is estimated that this sector accounts for around 21-24% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions (source: Our World in Data). The main factors contributing to these emissions are inefficient route planning, unnecessary idle times and high fuel consumption.
Companies that use heavy commercial vehicles are therefore faced with the challenge of implementing targeted measures to make their contribution to climate protection.
But it's not just about the environment. These factors – inefficient routes, fuel consumption and idle times – have a direct impact on operating costs. Companies that manage to optimise these factors can significantly reduce their costs, too, which offers a decisive competitive advantage, especially in highly competitive markets.
It is only logical then that the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) provides targeted support for companies in exactly this area, thus killing two birds with one stone:
On the one hand, it boosts climate protection; on the other, it strengthens the competitiveness of domestic companies and the economy as a whole. This in turn leads to growth in wealth, potential for higher tax revenues and therefore opportunities for new subsidies - a real „virtuous cycle“ that sets positive developments in motion.
Telematics solutions: The key to optimisation
Efficiency improvements in heavy goods transport can be effectively realised through targeted technological measures. This is precisely where our telematics solution comes in. It offers an integrated platform that helps companies to systematically optimise key factors such as route planning, fuel consumption and idle times.
Fleet- and driving style optimisation
Optimised route planning and precise live scheduling based on real-time locations and current arrival forecasts for all vehicles means that unnecessary journeys can be avoided and downtimes efficiently minimised. At the same time, analyses of driving style and the recording of fuel consumption per driver and route enable targeted identification of training requirements. Customised incentive schemes can also be used to motivate drivers to develop a fuel-efficient and economical driving style, which not only lowers fuel consumption and fuel costs, but also reduces wear and tear on vehicles.
Save time with remote tacho downloading
Another decisive advantage of our telematics solution is the automatic remote reading of digital tachographs and driver cards. This not only enables complete recording of driving times and rest periods, but also ensures that all provisions of the German Driving Personnel Ordinance (FPersV) are upheld. Seamless integration means that potential offences are detected at an early stage and fines can thus be avoided. Manual effort associated with reading out data on site is also eliminated, which significantly reduces the administrative burden. Moreover, social responsibility - in terms of employee protection in regards to working hours and rest periods - is guaranteed by this technology, which leads to an optimal balance between efficiency and occupational health and safety.
Your investment in the future
The telematics system often pays for itself already within the first year thanks to its numerous benefits, from fuel savings to increased efficiency. Nevertheless, the introduction initially requires a financial investment, which may cause hesitation among some companies. However, funding programmes such as „Umweltschutz und Sicherheit“ (environmental protection and safety) significantly ease the transition to a modern telematics system. Such financial support makes it easier to get started, allowing companies to reap the benefits of digitalisation and optimisation of their fleets more quickly and sustainably.
Funding programme „Umweltschutz und Sicherheit“: Simple steps to funding
The „Umweltschutz und Sicherheit“ (environmental protection and safety) funding programme offers companies the opportunity to receive financial support for investments in telematics solutions and other efficiency-enhancing measures. The next funding period is expected to start in the coming months. Interested companies should check the BALM website early on for information about the funding programmes and their requirements and keep an eye on the start of the new application phase, as funding is allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Applications are easily submitted online via the eService portal of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM). The application can be submitted in just a few steps and the portal offers intuitive guidance through the process. The subsidy covers up to 80% of the eligible costs, depending on the number of heavy commercial vehicles in the company.
